  • Investigated patterns for important regulatory genes and hormones throughout the life cycle of the honey bee, including previously unstudied insect hormones.

  • Extracted RNA, synthesized DNA, and analyzed samples using quantitative PCR

  • Extracted and purified insect hemolymph samples, and analyzed samples using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy

  • Assisted in honey bee husbandry

  • Assisted in the monitoring of American Kestrel nest-boxes

Responsibility:

  • Engaged undergraduates and faculty at USF to investigate the dose-response curve of honey bees to the Nosema pathogen after pre-exposure to the fungicide chlorothalonil.

  • Assisted in development of a research project to investigate the behavioral resistance of oak toads to the chytrid fungus.

  • Observed and recorded toad behavior during experiments.

  • Extracted DNA and analyzed samples using quantitative PCR.

Undergraduate Research Assistant.

Dates: 2/24-6/27/2014.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyzed population dynamics of healthy honey bee colonies by documenting and quantifying changes in the area of brood and honey cells in each hive.

  • Carried out assays of bees treated with varying concentrations of neonicotinoid pesticides and recorded changes in behavior.
